Christmas Spirit in Films

22 Δεκ.

If there’s one thing I love more than Christmas is watching Christmas films. There are so many to re-watch (or watch for the first time) that I almost get a christmas spirit hangover the day after. I like the classic tales like A Christmas Carol (I have seen every version of it I could find on TV) and then the ones that have a little christmas story in them. But, before you get excited and go watch every single christmas film there is out there, I have made a list with all my favourite films and a few reasons WHY you should watch them this Christmas.

A Christmas Carol (1984)

The story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a very mean man who loathes Christmas, by Charles Dickens is a classic one and should be watched at least one time in your life. However, there are so many versions of it (not all good) that makes it a little hard to pick. My personal favourite is the one starring George C. Scott. He is the ideal Scrooge for me and the scene where Jacob Marley’s ghost is visiting him scared the crap out of me the first time. A must see!

Favourite Christmas Scene: When Jacob Marley is visiting Scrooge! All time favourite!

It’s A Wonderful Life (1946)

I only recently saw this film and loved it. It’s about a business man, George Bailey, who on Christmas Eve gets frustrated with his life and family. He gets drunk and wishes he never lived. When he is about to jump off a bridge a guardian angel shows him what life would be like if he never lived. A heartwarming film about love, family and life values. You can watch the colorized version or the black and white.

Favourite Christmas Scene: When George returns to his normal life and is running around while wishing «Merry Christmas» to everyone.

Love Actually (2003)

A film with so many worth mentioning actors cannot be that bad right? Yes, you’re right! This collection of mini different stories all happening close to Christmas is pure perfection. Ordinary people living in London telling their stories, some of them sad, some funny, and some just melt your heart. With Alan Rickman, Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Emma Thompson, Colin Firth, Keira Knightley and Bill Bighy (a few stars of this film).

Favourite Christmas Scene: It’s not so much a Christmas scene, but a confession of love. When Mark confesses his forbidden and one-sided love to Juliet. Just melts my heart! Truly!!!

Mickey’s Christmas Carol (1983)

For the child in you (mine is one big baby) watch this Disney cartoon twist on the classic A Christmas Carol. And who can be a better Scrooge than Scrooge McDuck himself? Watch your favourite disney characters and have a lot of fun. You don’t have to be 10 to watch this. It’s a guilty pleasure for the adults as well.

Favourite Christmas Scene: The whole thing! It’s so wonderfully made that it reminds me of my childhood.

Home Alone (1990)

Would Christmas really be Christmas without Home Alone? No. Who doesn’t adore this little menace that is left behind when his family flies away to France for holidays? Macaulay Culkin will remain in history of modern films as the most adorable blonde kid.

Favourite Christmas Scene: When the delivery boy brings him the pizza and he scares him to death. I must have laughed my a** off when I first saw it! I still remember the stomachache afterwards.

The Holiday (2006)

Amanda (Cameron Diaz) and Iris (Kate Winslet) are unhappy with their lives and in need of a change. So, they exchange homes right before Christmas and get to experience a different life. Also starring Jude Law and Jack Black. This is a wonderful chick-lit film that will for sure make you laugh and tear a bit. Watch it preferably while eating some pop-corn and snuggling under the duvet.

Favourite Christmas Scene: When Amanda meets Graham’s (Jude Law) daughters.

Noel (2004)

This film is like Love Actually , where several stories are being told around Christmas holidays. These stories and especially Susan Sarandon’s character’s are very moving. Also, starring Penelope Cruz, Robin Williams and Paul Walker.

Favourite Christmas Scene: When Rose (Susan Sarandon) steps into Nina’s (Penelope Cruz) house by mistake on Christmas Eve.

Bad Santa (2003)

Willie (Billy Bob Thorton) is a conman who dresses up like Santa with his partner and try to rob department stores on Christmas Eve. But, when he meets a weird kid he starts getting into some real trouble. This cynical story about Christmas will make you laugh and move you towards the end. Thorton plays a really bad-ass Santa!

Favourite Christmas Scene: When Willie and the kid make an awesome Christmas ornament out of pop-corn! Yeah, pop-corn!

So there you have it! A collection of Christmas films you have to watch just to add a bit of holiday spirit in on Christmas Day! Merry Christmas everyone!
